Renovating Rental Properties

“When you have an apartment or community, turning the apartment is a fairly straightforward process,” says Paul Rhodes, National Maintenance and Safety Instructor at the National Apartment Association Education Institute.

There are some basic steps that need to be taken each time a resident moves out to ensure the apartment is in tiptop shape. Property managers must organize the process to make it as streamlined as possible, inspect the apartment before the resident moves out to get an idea of what kind of rehab is needed, and plan larger renovations ahead of time, says Stephanie Anderson, regional property manager for Drucker and Falk.

When it comes time to renovate or rehab an apartment, do as much as your time and budget allow in order to make that apartment as close to new as possible, Rhodes says.
