Siding Squares

Simple 9-Step Measurement Guide

This calculator is to be used as an estimating tool ONLY.

1: Draw a separate sketch for each side of the house.
2: Measure the height and width of each side. Multiply height by width to get that side's surface area in square feet. Add side measurements and enter them here.
3: Measure gables, dormers and any other areas not included in the sides. For each triangle-shaped area, measure from the base to the top, then multiply this measurement by ½ the base length. Add these measurements and enter them here.
4: Measure the width and height of windows, doors and any other areas that will not be covered with siding. Multiply height by width for each area and add to get total square footage not covered with siding. Enter this total square footage here.
5: Steps 2 and 3 have been added together, and Step 4 has been subtracted from this sum. Ten percent (10%) has been added as a safety measure, to cover any waste from trimming and minor miscalculations.
6: Vinyl siding comes in 100-square-foot units called "squares." This is the total number of squares you will need.
7: Measure soffit areas. Take length and width measurements in the area underneath your eaves. Multiply height by width for each area and add to get total soffit square footage needed. Enter this total square footage here.
Total # of soffit "squares" you will need.
8: Consider which trim strips and accessories you want and where you want to place them. Measure to find the number of linear feet needed for each.
9: Record all your measurements on the sketches of your home. Now you're ready to order your siding and get started!
